Good evening, 66.1ers.
Buckle up if you’ve had weight loss on your mind recently.
This one’s for you…
Sex, nails, dogs, goals?
Been talking to a few folks who want to lose weight.
Knees hurt.
Can't keep up with their kids on a hike.
Their sex life has taken a hit.
Blood pressure is up, weight is up, happiness is down.
They eat “pretty well”.
Are “pretty active”.
Note that these are relative terms.
They’re healthier than their unhealthy friends, family, and coworkers.
When asked exactly why they want to lose the weight, they say something vague like, “So I don’t have so much joint pain.”
When asked how much weight they want to lose and by when?
They make something up.
It’s a round number.
“20 pounds in 6 months.”
“50 pounds in a year.”
No problem.
I’ve been there.
Say an ambitious, round number.
Throw yourself at it for a while.
But it’s not specific enough to really spur change.
How to fix that?
Answer these:
Where is that number coming from?
Do you really need to lose 50 pounds?
Or would 20 be an awesome start?
Are you trying to be high-school skinny?
Or do you just want your body to do as you say, without pain, so you can enjoy your second half of life?
I once heard a wise 73-year-old say, “Nobody wants a svelte 80-year-old.”
Need more?
Then answer these:
What happens if you don’t change?
How does life look in 3, 5, 10 years?
Are you getting your knees replaced?
Or maybe you’re too heavy to qualify for the surgery?
Your A1C is probably higher.
Blood pressure, too.
What does this mean for your relationship with your kids and grandkids?
How could you change the trajectory of 3 decades of your family if you decided that today is the day you’re going to take charge of your health, once and for all?
A coach recently reminded me, when I was struggling to find a compelling reason to make big change, of this story of the dog on the nail:
If you’re in the “I want to lose weight” camp, how long will you lay on the nail?
How bad does it have to be before you do something about it?
