Good evening, 66.1ers.
Priorities
The P word. One I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Rifle season opened today in Montana. That means for the next 5 weeks, hunting is as good as it’s going to get. Safe to say hunting will be a priority for me.
Vince Lombardi said priorities went like this: God, family, Green Bay Packers. Do those 3–in that order–and you’ll be good. I don’t think we have any Green Bay Packers players in the audience yet, so maybe for you it’s your God, your family, and your mission. Mission = the thing you’re good at, the thing people look to you for. If it’s not your full-time job already, do as much of it as you can. We need it.
Viktor Frankl said the question wasn’t, “What can I expect from life?” but rather, “What does life expect of me? Or ‘What task in life is waiting for me?”
I’m afraid many of us in the developed (read: easy) world have gotten a bit too comfortable asking what we can expect from life. Leads to a sense of entitlement and perpetual disappointment. What if, instead of expecting life to serve you, you stepped outside yourself, stopped trying to coax the world to meet your needs, accepted where you’re at in life, and worked to meet the needs of the people around you? Might this approach align you with your mission? Might life be more fun?
Maybe this means helping people directly, like a doctor or nurse. Maybe it means staying home to care for your children. Maybe it changed based on your season of life. Could be the 20 year old checking groceries and working at Chipotle. Between the two, he’s doing 60 hours a week. Was in a car accident, car totaled, savings zapped. Not feeling sorry for himself. He’s going to hustle his way to a new car, full bank account, and a new life.
At the end of the day, we all have a “Green Bay Packers”. You don’t get to decide you’re a Green Bay Packer. Even the Green Bay Packers themselves didn’t have much of a choice in that matter. Life happened how it did and now they’re where they are. And you’re where you are.
You might be wondering where health fits into all this? Don’t sweat. I’m bringing it around…
