Good morning, 66.1ers.

Coming to you “stream-of-consciousness” style today. Headed out on an elk hunt this afternoon. A few important conversations have happened this week:

  1. Mentor

In his 70s. Has lived longer than his grandfather and his father. Heart disease runs in the family. How’d he do it? His words: “I forgot how to spell ‘stress’.” The other thing he’s got going for him (you’ll notice a pattern here as you keep reading): he’s still working. Not because he needs the money. But because he’s helping people. He has a purpose. Is making the world a better place.

  2. Patient

In his mid-90s. Still plays golf, sells insurance, and is the #1 chapter leader in the state at his church. His words: “My kids are always telling me I’ve got to slow down. I don’t. I tell them that if I slow down, I’ll die. If you don’t have something to do, people to help, and you just sit in your rocking chair, you’ll die.” Again. Making the world a better place. Helping people every day.

  3. Dad

Talked to my dad on the phone the other day. He’s 63. Has gained muscle and lost fat in the past year. Lifting weights 3x/week, eating more protein, and retired from his stressful job. On a sabbatical right now. Not done working, but done worrying. Will take the right gig when it comes along, but not in a rush to go back to stressing out in exchange for a paycheck.

As for me, I’m going out to the mountains this afternoon. Will be sleeping on the ground the next 2 nights. Maybe we’ll harvest an elk. Maybe not. Either way, we’ll enjoy the hunt. Because what’s the point if I don’t have a life, spend time with friends, get outside?

So? If you want to live longer, sure you should lift weights, eat clean, etc. But if you haven’t aligned this “spreadsheetable” stuff with a mission your heart’s on board with? You’re leaving a lot on the table. Like I said, I’m headed out this weekend. Short one today as a result.

More to read here, though:

Have fun out there.

Marcus
