Mouth breathing, infertility, a dose of truth
Why I sleep with packing tape on my mouth...
Read time: 4 minutes
Good evening, 66.1ers.
Watched the documentary “The Plastic Detox” earlier this week. If you’re pre-kids and hoping someday to change that status to post-kids, you might want to watch it. All sorts of stuff about how plastic in our food, water, cleaning products, hygiene products, clothing and on and on. Messes up our hormones, makes it hard to have kids. Kinda freaky.
Other people and AI can tell you exactly what you need to do to get rid of plastic in your daily life, so I’ll leave that to them. This one appears to be a very thorough step-by-step “detox” protocol.
Here’s the trailer:
An interesting conversation this week ended with a mentor telling me, “The greatest gift you can give someone in life is the truth.” One of those things that’s obvious once it’s said out loud, but isn’t often said out loud. You hiding the truth from anyone? Might they benefit if you were to find a way to share it with them? Ever been relieved/grateful something else when someone shared a truth with you?
One more interesting bit from the past couple weeks: when I went to the doctor a couple months ago, a number of lab values were wonky. They’re mostly better now thanks to getting over a cold, but my doctor’s mention that they could be related to sleep apnea sent me down a rabbit hole. Got to reading and listening to James Nestor. He tapes his mouth shut when he’s sleeping. Apparently, nasal breathing is a very good thing for your health. He’s most famous for his book Breath.

After listening to James on The Diary of a CEO, the Tim Ferriss Show, and Joe Rogan, I started sleeping with tape on my mouth. Just to see if I could do it at first, now I’m curious if it’ll bring down my red blood cell count (often associated with sleep apnea/disrupted sleep/low oxygen levels/mouth breathing). Going to give it a few more months and get labs re-drawn. Will report back. For now, you can roll your eyes at the image of me sticking a piece of packing tape to my mouth before bed every night…

If any of this sparked a thought/reaction/something else, and you want to hit “reply”, I’ll be here.
