Food for thought:
A study published in January 2024 found, for the first time, that microplastic fragments are consistently found in edible oils from Italy and Spain.
While this is only the second study of its kind, there are a few interesting takeaways:
The type of oil doesnât matterOlive oil, sunflower oil, extra virgin olive oil. They all had microplastics.
Packaging doesnât matter, either2 of the oils tested were in glass bottles and the remaining 7 were packaged in plastic bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, the majority of the plastic found in the samples was not PET, indicating the contamination came from additional steps beyond packaging.
PE is the main culpritPolyethylene, not pulmonary embolism. Itâs found in the plastic caps on both plastic and glass bottles of cooking oils.
Hereâs a look at the dataâŠ

What to do??
If youâre saying, âDang, guy, youâre freaking me out here. What should I do about all these microplastics in my life?â, donât sweat it.
Weâre about action, not anxiety, here at 66.1. Here are 3 common-sense steps to steer clear of microplastics in your seed oils.
Less processing = betterThe study found that MPs come from multiple stages of the seed oil production process. To reduce your risk, find the oils that only require a few steps to get from field to fork. For example, cold-pressed extra virgin organic olive oil requires fewer steps than a chemically treated and heated canola oil.
Befriend the buzzwordsâOrganicâ is code for âwe didnât spray it with harmful chemicalsâ. And those harmful chemicals have microplastics. No bueno. âCold pressedâ is code for âwe didnât heat this to a ridiculous temperature to get oil out of a seedâ (which causes oxidation of the oil and inflammation in your body).
Spend the moneyIf youâve ever spent meaningful time in the Olive Oil aisle, you know it gets expensive up toward the top shelf. But thatâs also where you find the good stuff. Find something thatâs minimally processed and add it to your cart.Itâs not fun to spend $15+ on a nice bottle of olive oil when you could buy a refined oil for 1/3 of the price, but consider it an investment in your health. Better to spend the $15 now to keep chronic disease away then $15,000 later for a life-saving medical procedure.
A question for you:
Credit to James Clear for this idea. You only get to do one type of exercise for the rest of your life. Itâs the activity that puts you into a flow state.
Flow state = youâre stoked to be doing what youâre doing, youâd do it even if it didnât make you healthier, hours feel like seconds when youâre doing this activity.
What exercise do you choose?
Workout of the week:
Power planks3 rounds of 3 sets of 10 second planks.
Itâs good for strength, great for mobility. I find that this take on your classic plank is a great exercise for disrupting any tension holding your body in unnatural (and likely painful) postures.
A few tips:
If you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, this one is not for you. Ask your doctor what you might do instead.
Weâre going for max effort here. Contract your muscles as much as possible. You should be shaking.
Donât turn into a tomatoYou donât need to contract your head and neck. Thatâs just going to have your forehead veins bulging and you feeling lightheaded.

Thatâs all for this Wednesday.See you on Saturday.Have fun out there.Marcus
